In this monthly column I usually write about our products and innovations, but this time I would like to write about an unusual benefit we offer our team members.

In Academia, professors receive a one or two term fully paid sabbatical every five or so years to further study in their specialty. Great idea and everyone wins. The professors step back from teaching and spend full time researching their subject, in the library or on site, have time to reflect on teaching and life, and time for mental and physical rejuvenation.

It seemed like a pretty good idea, so many years ago we added a similar benefit: every five years or so, every employee gets three paid months off to wander, explore, further their job skills, study something familiar or bizarre, etc. It has worked out well. Employees return to work refreshed and relaxed, ready for new challenges and with all sorts of new skill sets, some you would never think of.

One of the most innovative sabbaticals has just started. One of our people has spent the last few years studying Japanese language and culture and is now off for a few months exploring Japan and all it has to offer. Wow!
